Product Information
The Sinclair Method was developed by Dr John Sinclair in the 1980s. The theory was that Naltrexone could be used to reduce the ‘feel good’ feeling people get when they drink by taking Naltrexone.
Dr Sinclair’s theory turned out to be correct. Naltrexone can help you to reduce the frequency and amount that you drink. Many people have used Naltrexone to gradually become alcohol-free.
Naltrexone works by reducing the amount of Dopamine (the chemical neurotransmitter in the brain that makes you feel good to encourage you to repeat behaviours) released when you drink. You take a Naltrexone tablet one hour before drinking and you’ll notice a difference in how good you feel.
Using Naltrexone for people that use alcohol is recommended by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE). NICE is a body that provides clinical guidelines and quality standards. We are proud to say at DTXIFY that we surpass the minimum standards set out by NICE.
The Sinclair Method has been proven to be 70-80% effective in reducing or stopping a person’s alcohol use in large international studies.

Frequently Asked Questions
DTXIFY’s Sinclair Method, uses Naltrexone to gradually reduce alcohol cravings and consumption, offering a controlled, non-abstinence approach to managing alcohol use disorder.
DTXIFY supports moderate drinking goals with the Sinclair Method, allowing for a gradual reduction in alcohol dependence through scientifically backed techniques and medication.
- Removes the reward feeling you get if you drink alcohol.
- It reduces cravings for alcohol.
- It currently has very few contraindications or cautions, meaning that it is suitable for most clients that want to reduce their alcohol use.
Alternative options include a home alcohol detoxification and a gradual non-medical reduction.
A home alcohol detoxification (or detox) is the process of relieving neurons in the brain from their dependence on alcohol to function normally in a controlled and safe way. It is done by using a short course of Benzodiazepines, usually 5-10 days to replace the alcohol’s inhibitor response on the brain and then to gradually reduce the dose of Benzodiazepines to nil.
Another option, would be a gradual non-medical reduction. This involves keeping a daily drink diary and reducing intake by 1 unit per day. This is a safe amount to reduce each day. However, clients may struggle with a non-medical gradual reduction, on reaching a certain point, many clients struggle to reduce further to nil alcohol use.
Suitability
The Sinclair Method is suitable for most people who wish to reduce their alcohol consumption, however, it is not suitable for people with liver disease or acute hepatitis.
A blood test is undertaken prior to starting on Naltrexone to ensure good liver function and an absence of acute hepatitis.
